Share the Wealth Judicial Clerkship Program
**Application deadline: July 14, 2017**
Federal District Court Clerkship Opportunities (2018–2019 Term)
This message is to inform you of a special opportunity to be considered for clerkships with three federal district judges, one federal magistrate judge, and one bankruptcy judge in a jointly held interview. I am currently working as a federal judicial law clerk for the Honorable Gerald Bruce Lee of the Eastern District of Virginia. Judge Lee and several of his colleagues feel that it is important to encourage more minorities to compete for federal judicial clerkships. These judges accept and consider law clerk applicants of all backgrounds, and this opportunity is merely an effort in addition to, not in lieu of, traditional application channels.
The Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program is a referral program run by judges. Participating judges screen qualified law student applicants, conduct panel interviews with fourteen students, and consider them for full-time clerkship positions. At the conclusion of this initial process, students who are not extended an offer by one of the judges may have their application packages shared with additional judges who have requested information on applicants through JTB.
Five federal judges will be conducting a round of interviews in connection with Just the Beginning–A Pipeline Organization’s Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program. Fourteen students will be selected to interview; you may not attend unless you are specifically invited to do so. The interview will occur in Alexandria, Virginia in mid-August. The selected students will be notified of the exact location of the interview and their time slot.
The following district judges will participate in the 2017 law clerk interview session: Hon. Raymond Jackson (E.D. Va.), Hon. Ivan Lemelle (E.D. La.), and Hon. Benita Pearson (N.D. Ohio). Additionally, United States Bankruptcy Judge Klinette Kindred (E.D. Va.) and United States Magistrate Judge Ivan Davis (E.D. Va.) will also be participating. Please note that the clerkships are for one-year terms starting in 2018.
Each judge will review applications and participate in deciding which students to invite to this special round of interviews. You must submit a separate application package via OSCAR to each judge whom you would like to consider your application. Please see below for further clarification on application deadlines and submission guidelines for specific judges. The panel will only interview candidates who will agree to be considered for a clerkship by at least three of the five participating judges. The application deadline is July 14, 2017
- Judge Benita Pearson: In addition to submitting an application on OSCAR, applications should be sent in paper form directly to Judge Pearson’s chambers. The address for Judge Pearson’s chambers is 313 Thomas D. Lambros United States Federal Building and Courthouse, 125 Market Street, Youngstown, Ohio 44503-1780.
The page that follows contains instructions for submitting your clerkship application materials online via OSCAR. Paper applications will not be accepted (except Judge Pearson). If you are considering applying to these judges, it is of the utmost importance that you begin to gather your application materials now.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any general questions about the application process, but do NOT contact the chambers of judges that you have applied to with respect to the status of your applications. Candidates who advance to the interview round will be notified by email.
