Federal Magistrate Judge Clerkship Interview Opportunities (2017–2018 Term)*

*All 14 students selected to interview on Saturday, August 13, 2016 for the  previously posted District Court Clerkships have already been contacted. Please do not call chambers.  Those who applied to the district court clerkship program, but were not contacted, are strongly encouraged to apply for the magistrate judge program below.

The federal magistrate clerkship application deadline closed on August 26, 2016

This message is to inform you of a special opportunity to be considered for six federal magistrate judge clerkships in one interview and to encourage you to apply. Judge Gerald Bruce Lee and several of his colleagues feel that it is important to encourage more minorities to compete for federal judicial clerkships.  These judges accept and consider law clerk applicants of all backgrounds, and this opportunity is merely an effort in addition to, not in lieu of, traditional application channels. The Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program is a referral program run by judges. Participating judges screen qualified law student applicants, conduct panel interviews with twelve students, and consider them for full-time clerkship positions. At the conclusion of this initial process, students who are not extended an offer by one of the judges may have their application packages shared with additional judges who have requested information on applicants through JTB.

Judge Ivan Davis (E.D. Va.), along with five of his colleagues, will be conducting a regional round of interviews in connection with Just the Beginning–A Pipeline Organization’s Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program this fall in Alexandria, Virginia. Fourteen students will be selected to interview; you may not attend unless you are specifically invited to do so. The interview will occur in Alexandria, Virginia on Saturday, September 24, 2016.  The selected students will be notified of the exact location of the interview and their time slot.

The following federal magistrate judges will be participating in the 2016 law clerk interview session:

  • Judge Ivan Davis (E.D. Va.)
  • Judge Nancy Joseph (E.D. Wi.)
  • Judge Karen Wells Roby (E.D.La.)
  • Judge Julie Sneed (M.D. Fl.)
  • Judge Bernard Jones (W.D. Okl.)

Please note that the clerkships are for one-year terms starting in 2017. You must submit your application via OSCAR only. Paper applications will not be accepted. If you are considering applying to these judges, it is of the utmost importance that you begin to gather your application materials now.

Each judge will review applications and participate in deciding which students to invite to this special round of interviews. You must submit a separate application package via OSCAR to each judge whom you would like to consider your application.  Please see below for further clarification on application deadlines and submission guidelines for specific judges.

The panel will only interview candidates who will agree to be considered for a clerkship by at least three of the participating judges. The application deadline is August 26, 2016.

Keith Williams, Law Clerk to the Honorable Gerald Bruce Lee
U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Alexandria Division

Whitney Mulhauser, Law Clerk to the Honorable Ivan Davis
U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Alexandria Division

**Please do NOT contact chambers. Candidates will be notified of their status approximately 2 weeks after the close of the application period.**
