Joshua and Dorothy Williams Memorial Legal Education Scholarship (incoming 1L for 2020-2021 school year)

Just the Beginning – A Legal Pipeline Organization is proud to announce the inaugural Joshua and Dorothy Williams Memorial Legal Education Scholarship. Joshua and Dorothy Williams, beloved parents of The Honorable Ann Claire Williams, were staunch believers in education, pursuing dreams and aspirations, and opening doors for those who are following behind. They nurtured and taught old fashioned values with love and humility.

Just the Beginning – A Pipeline Organization Law School Scholarships (current 1L or 2L)

In support of Just the Beginning – A Pipeline Organization’s mission of encouraging underrepresented students to pursue career and leadership opportunities in the law we are proud to offer Just the Beginning – A Pipeline Organization Law School Scholarships. Named in honor of six trailblazing judges who worked towards diversity in the bar and bench we are excited to support law school students working towards their goals.

The scholarships are named in honor of the following judges: Honorable James Parsons, Honorable Reynaldo Garza, Honorable Herbert Choy, Honorable William H. Hastie, Honorable Thurgood Marshal, and Honorable Robert L. Carter.

Scholarship applications are due on May 1, 2020 at 11:59 PM, and awardees will be notified in early July 2020.

Joshua and Dorothy Williams Memorial Legal Education Scholarship

Applicants

This scholarship is open to all qualified and deserving incoming 1L students for the 2020-2021 school year. Applicants should be in their final semester of undergraduate education and accepted to a Chicago-area law school at the time of application.

Award

Just the Beginning will award two incoming 1L students each a $5,000 scholarship at the Just the Beginning – A Pipeline Organization 12th National Conference Gala on September 19, 2020.

Criteria

The nominee must

  • Be an incoming 1L student for the 2020-2021 school year;
  • Be accepted at Chicago-area law school; and
  • Have an undergraduate grade point average of at least a 3.2 overall, based on a 4.0 scale.

Application Materials

The application for the Joshua and Dorothy Williams Memorial Legal Education Scholarship is available here. To complete the application, you will need the following materials:

  • Essay describing the reasons for applying to law school and aspirations in law as a career choice upon graduation (750 words or less)
  • Undergraduate transcript
  • Proof of acceptance at a Chicago-area law school
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Resume highlighting any previous participation in JTB programming and/or work towards diversity and inclusion

Just the Beginning – A Pipeline Organization Law School Scholarships

Applicants

Applicants should have successfully completed at least one semester of law school at a Chicago-area law school at the time of application.

Award

Just the Beginning will award six law school students each a $5,000 scholarship at the Just the Beginning – A Pipeline Organization 12th National Conference Gala on September 19, 2020. Only one awardee per school will be selected.

Criteria

The nominee must

  • Be a current 1L or 2L;
  • Be enrolled at Chicago-area law school; and
  • Have a law school grade point average of at least a 3.2 overall, based on a 4.0 scale.

The application for the Just the Beginning – A Pipeline Organization Law School Scholarship is available here. To complete the application, you will need the following materials:

  • Essay discussing why you believe diversity in the bar and bench is important (750 words or less)
  • Law school transcript
  • Two letters of recommendations (at least one from a law school professor)
  • Resume highlighting any previous participation in JTB programming and/or work towards diversity and inclusion
